Today's Scripture: Philippians 4:10-14
"I can do all things through Him who strengthens me."
You are not Superman.
Many times, this verse is quoted as if to say that being a follower of Jesus gives some kind of superhuman, supernatural strength so that there is nothing we cannot do. Or, it's used to imply that as Christians we have unlimited spiritual abilities.
Either way, it's used in some sort of comprehensive way. And while it does give proper credit to Jesus as the source of strength, it misses the point of what Paul said.
Consider the passage as a whole. Paul said he rejoiced because the Philippian believers were able to show material support for him in some way in verse 10. Then, in verse 11, and this is key to verse 13, Paul said he has learned to be content in whatever circumstances he faces. Verse 12 then provides some examples. Whether rich or poor, hungry or full, needy or not, Paul has learned to be content.
Verse 13, is why Paul can be content in all circumstances (verse 11). Yes, he can carry out his mission in the face of adverse circumstances through the strength of Jesus. But, that same strength is what gives him the ability to be content in carrying out that mission.
He can do the work he was called to do without giving up, without faltering in his faith, without drowning in despair. He can serve the Lord in peace and contentment not by his own strength, but by the strength of Jesus. This is why he can rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in everything as he says in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.
So, while you are not Superman with supernatural abilities, you too can be content in all things. You have the strength of Jesus to carry you through.
This is the kind of life you discover when you choose to begin again, when you choose new life in Jesus Christ.
Stop trying to rely upon your own strength. Instead, rely upon the strength of the one who defeated the greatest enemy by his resurrection from the dead. That one is Jesus Christ.
Think about it …
Think back to the last time you faced circumstances that threatened to overwhelm you. Did you find peace and contentment in Jesus in that situation?
If not, how might you prepare yourself for the next time you face a difficult situation?
